Transgender prisoners can use new £150million cells with en suite toilets and showers

The Government is spending £150million at women’s jails on 500 new cells which can be used for transgender lags.

They will be single occupancy with ensuite loos and showers. But some will enable women to have their kids overnight to prepare for life at home.

Tory Baroness Scott of Bybrook confirmed the cells plan to support “transgender needs” as required by law and jail policy.

In July, a High Court Judge ruled holding transgender women in female jails is lawful because a ban would ignore their right to live as their chosen gender.

Transgender prisoner Karen White, 55, sexually assaulted two women inmates in 2017 while on remand at HMP New Hall, in Wakefield, West Yorks, for other offences.

White, who was transitioning and had previously raped two other women, was given a life sentence in 2018.

The judge at Leeds crown court described White, born Stephen Wood, as a “predator” who was a danger to women and children.

Justice minister Lord Wolfson revealed female prisoners who call transgender inmates “he” or “him” face extra time in jail under equality rules or could be punished for “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour”.

The Ministry of Justice said trans women can mix with others in jail but decisions were made on a case-by-case basis.
