£150,000 to be spent 'changing the focus' of Newstead Abbey and making it more family-friendly

Plans to 'enhance the visitor activities' at Newstead Abbey have been revealed following the sale of a property on-site.

East Lodge, known locally as Hutt Lodge, situated in the grounds of the historic monastery, was sold recently.

Nottingham City Council plan to reinvest the £151,000 of sale proceeds to make improvements at the popular visitor attraction, which was the former home of Lord Byron.

Improvements at the park are the responsibility of the council and include the roads, car parks, play areas and visitor facilities.

A council report states: "A business plan is in place for Newstead Abbey that gives options for redevelopment and reinstatement opportunities.

"The plan will ensure that the site becomes sustainable, operating in a highly competitive market, whilst continuing as a major regional visitor and tourist attraction."

The council's plan aims to boost Newstead Abbey to become a top-five tourist attraction in Nottinghamshire and enhance the current activities while preserving its historical significance.

It also wants to enable Newstead Abbey to become self-sustainable and attract further funding for future developments at the site.

"It is important for the future of Newstead Abbey that it is repositioned within the marketplace, building on its current reputation as a site of historical importance," the report added.

"This involves changing the focus for the site to encourage visitors to maximise use of and appreciate the offer within the park, such as walks, cafés, play areas and gardens.

"Newstead Abbey needs to broaden its customer base to encourage more families with the aim to keep more people on site for longer, through offering increased opportunities for secondary spend and the use of accommodation on site."
