15-year-old girl shot to death on porch on Chicago's South Side

CHICAGO _ A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed while on a porch with a group of other teenagers in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side Tuesday night, according to Chicago police.

Jazmyne Jeter was shot in the chest around 8:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Carpenter Street, police said. She was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson said someone in a passing car fired at the group and someone on the porch returned fire. He said the girl was not the intended target.

Jazmyne lived about five miles away, in the 8100 block of South Burnham Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood, according to the medical examiner.

No one was in custody.

In other fatal attacks, an 18-year-old man was pronounced dead after he was shot along with a 60-year-old man in the Lawndale neighborhood in the 2200 block of South Kildare, police said.

The men were walking about 9:35 p.m. when someone in a gray Jaguar opened fire striking the teen multiple times in the head and body. The older victim, who suffered a wound to the back was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was stabilized. The younger man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

About 8:45 p.m., a 53-year-old man was killed and a 20-year-old man was wounded in the Englewood neighborhood in the 6100 block of South Racine Avenue, police said.

Officers responded to an argument in the rear of a building and found the older man with multiple wounds to the body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The younger man was shot in the abdomen, and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where his condition was stabilized.

Police said the victims were involved in a confrontation when additional people got involved which led to shots being fired. Police were still investigating to see determine who is responsible for the shooting.

A 27-year-old man was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said. A 24-year-old man also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

The two were on foot when a vehicle drove past and someone inside started shooting, hitting them, police said.

In an unrelated attack, three men were wounded, one suffering critical injuries, in a shooting about 7:20 p.m. in the 3000 block of West Roosevelt Road, police said. One victim, 33, suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was in critical condition at a local hospital, while two others, ages 28 and 43, were shot in the buttocks and were in good condition, police said.

The men were standing on the sidewalk when someone got out of a dark sedan and started shooting at them, police said. The attacker got back in the car and it drove away.

At the scene, several officers gathered outside Brother's Five Inc. Liquor, 3034 W. Roosevelt Road, where seven evidence markers sat over shell casings in the parking spaces on Whipple Avenue, on the east side of the building. Some of the casings were less than a foot away from a moped, the only vehicle parked there, and abandoned cans of alcoholic beverages.

Witnesses say shots rang out and two men who were hit lay on the sidewalk, one north of Roosevelt near the store, the other south on the northern edge of Douglas Park.

After the shooting, dozens of people congregated near the storefront, which had its security shutter halfway down, and in a parking lot across the street. A block east of the scene, children continued to run and play at a playground at Douglas Park.
