A 15-year-old girl died after being hit by a car “racing” another vehicle on the wrong side of the road, police said.
The teenager was out with four friends at the time of the collision in Paisley, Scotland, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but died a short time later.
Police Scotland said the car which hit the girl appeared to be speeding “in tandem with another car”.
After the collision, the driver initially stopped and got out before driving off.
Detective Inspector Allan Kelly of Paisley CID said: “We know that the car, a small hatchback, possibly a VW Polo, was damaged as a result of the collision, it had a cracked windscreen and bumper.
“We also know that the black car was on the wrong side of the road and driving beside another car, as if racing each other."
He added: “People may have seen these two cars either in that street or in surrounding streets either before or after.”
Detectives appealed for the occupants of the two vehicles to come forward.
The car which hit the girl was described as a dark, small, hatchback, possibly a VW Polo.
A 20 year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile police in Lancashire are appealing for information after a 12 year-old girl was killed in a crash on the M61 motorway.
Sana Patel, from Blackburn, was a passenger in Nissan Qashqai which collided with a Vauxhall Corsa on the northbound carriageway near junction eight. Five other people in the Qashqai suffered minor injuries.
The occupants of the Corsa fled the scene on foot before police arrived.
Superintendent Andy Cribbin, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: “We are appealing for the driver and any passenger at the time of the collision to make contact with us as soon as possible.
“A 12-year-old girl has tragically lost her life, so we would urge them to search their conscience and do the right thing by contacting us. We are also asking anybody who saw the collision, or saw either vehicle in the moments before it happened, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
