15-year-old boy's warning to other bike users after serious crash

These pictures show the aftermath of a serious bike crash that a 15-year-old boy wants you to see.

Welsh-born Lewys Jones fractured his skull in a bike crash because he wasn't wearing a helment.

The youngster suffered five fractures around his eye socket and another to the top of his skull,  Wales Online reports.

He spent three nights in hospital after the crash outside Merthyr Tydfil College while out with another boy on Friday, August 30.

Now, he has warned others about the dangers of not wearing the proper protection when riding out and about.

Lewys said: "I went to go over the ramp and a boy stood up in front of me and it was too late.

"The front wheel went over first and then it just flung me - straight into the floor. I landed on the side of my face."

Lewys said a passing police car stopped and officers tended to his injuries.

An ambulance was called but his grandad came and took him to Prince Charles Hospital instead.

"I had five fractures around my eye socket and one to the skull," Lewys said. "I didn't lose consciousness."

Lewys had to stay at Prince Charles until Monday but he has to visit the facility to check on his recovery.

He now wants to warn other young people about how important it is to wear a helmet.

"It is vital," he said. "It can save a life.

"I want to make young people aware that a helmet is safe to wear."

Lewys' grandad Keri Jones, 52, said: "We were worried about him because he was complaining about pains in his shoulder and neck.

"They had to do scans and X-rays to make sure there was no neck damage."

He added: "We keep trying to get it through to them about wearing a helmet but they think it just doesn't happen to them until it does."
