In the 25 years I’ve spent on this earth as a shopping addict, I’ve learned many things, but the main two are: 1. it’s always better to invest in less clothes that are better quality, and 2. those clothes often come with a hefty price tag. However, I’m not the type of person to blow my bank account on a new coat or pair of boots just because it’s from a must-have designer, so when I shop, I like to make sure I’m investing in quality pieces that are well-priced.
Now, that doesn’t mean I’m buying poorly-made pieces that will end up in a donation bin at the end of the season. Through my endless hours of online shopping, I’ve come to be pretty good at deciphering what’s affordable, but still good quality.
So, dear reader, I’m passing my findings onto you. I’ve compiled a list of well-made winter wardrobe essentials under $100 that will last you this season and beyond.
15 Quality Winter Essentials Under $100
Winter Tops
These are the base layer of your winter outfits, but don’t be mistaken, you still want these to be as warm as possible. Whether your office doesn’t know how to control the air conditioning or you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, there’s nothing worse than being a shivering mess all day.
It’s best to look out for cotton, wool and merino compositions, as these are going to keep you warmer than lighter fabrics. If you’re looking for maximum warmth, Uniqlo’s Heattech pieces are a winter staple, especially for layering under other pieces.
Winter Bottoms
There are three main bottoms you need in your winter wardrobe: trusty jeans, a warm pair trousers, and a skirt that doesn’t just look good, but also blocks out the wind and shelters your legs. For the trousers and skirt, a wool fabric will usually do the trick, but TBH, these often pass the $100 mark. So if you’re working with a budget, a wool blend will give you a similar level of warmth at a more affordable price point. H&M has a great wool blend knit pant that can be styled for casual occasions.
If you want a skirt fit for winter, Dazie’s Faux Suede Midi Skirt will block out the wind — just make sure you don’t wear it in the rain as faux suede can stain. As for jeans, Abrand is one of my personal favourites, and they have a range of styles under $100.
Winter Knits
Knitwear has got to be my favourite category when it comes to winter clothing. It’s soft, warm, and an easy way to add in a pop of colour to your outfits, except it can get expensive the second you start looking for pieces made using natural fibres.
The biggest mistake people make when shopping for affordable knitwear is settling for acrylic or polyester yarn. Just because you can’t fork out $200+ on a jumper, doesn’t mean you need to opt for pieces that will only last you one winter. Uniqlo (ugh, I love them so much) does some great merino wool knitwear for as little as $49.90. Glassons is another brand that’s making knits more accessible. While a lot of its clothes are polyester, they have some 100 per cent cotton styles that are well made.
Winter Jackets and Coats
Okay, this is where things start getting really tricky. A quality winter jacket or coat under $100 is hard to find, but it’s not impossible. If you have your eye on a particular brand or style that’s out of your budget, my best tip is keeping one eye on Depop and eBay. In fact, I’ve found some of my all-time favourite winter jackets on there.
Otherwise, H&M has some impressive coats that sit justtt under he $100 mark, like this polyester and cotton blend car coat. Target is another brand that has some great cheap coat options. Otherwise, you can keep you eyes peeled for sale styles from more expensive brands.
And if you have a little spare cash you want to invest in a winter coat, you can find our full guide over here.
