15 townhouses could be built on site of Gosforth care home

A former care home in a leafy Newcastle suburb could be demolished to make way for houses.

Michael Sehgal Properties is behind plans to flatten the former North Road Care Home to make way for 15 three-storey town houses and car park spaces.

A design and access statement submitted to Newcastle City Council claims that the three-bedroom homes proposed for Hollywood Avenue in Gosforth will offer "modern town house living".

It said: "The house types offer modern town house living

for residents in an established residential area on the outskirts of the city centre.

"The houses exceed the national space standards and offer spacious and high quality accommodation with private gardens to the front and rear."

The document also detailed the lay out of the planned houses, which include an open plan living, kitchen and dining area.

The first floor will also have two "generous" double bedrooms, a bathroom and en-suite.

And the second floor will have one bedroom and en-suite will be built within the pitched roof space.

This room will "benefit from a large south facing dormer window, some with external terraces, maximising space and views".

The statement also pointed out that the site has "excellent" public

transport links, with the Regent Centre Metro and bus stations only two minutes walk a way.

It added: "Numerous bus stations can be accessed on Great North

Road in under this time, linking the site to Gosforth High Street, Newcastle City Centre and the A1."

In another document, agent Ryder Architecture said that none of the houses on offer were required to be classed as affordable housing because land occupied by an empty building would be redeveloped.

The council's planning committee will decide whether to grant the application by June 18.
