15 Edinburgh food and drink products named tastiest in the world

Edinburgh is spoilt for choice when it comes to local food and drink producers.

From gin and butter to smoked fish and chocolate, Scotland's capital knows how to do it well and now 15 household names have been recognised by the Great Taste Awards 2021.

Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, the awards value taste above everything else, with all products being removed from their packaging before being tasted so that there's zero bias.

A whopping 14,113 different items were entered this year from over 100 countries with 5,383 products worldwide receiving a Great Taste 1-, 2- or 3-star award.

Our sister site Leicestershire Live reports that it took 86 socially-distanced judging days in both London and Dorset to get through all the entries, with Great Taste saying that it has unearthed the very finest food and drink from every nook and corner of the UK and beyond.

Food critics, chefs, restaurateurs, retail buyers, cooks, producers and a host of food writers, journalists and social media influencers were among the 355 esteemed palates to have rigorously blind tasted and judged the entries, providing detailed written feedback for the producer.

Each product is judged on a level playing field, according to its texture, appearance, composition and, of course, taste.

This year, 4,027 products were awarded a 1-star award, around 30 per cent, while 1,138 products were awarded a 2-star award for being 'Above and beyond delicious'.

Only 218 were awarded a 3-star 'Extraordinarily tasty foods' rating - less than two per cent of entries.

And some Edinburgh products made the cut.
