15,000 households will get up to £140 a day energy refunds after Storm Arwen chaos

Brits who had their energy cut off during Storm Arwen could get compensation of up to £140 a day.

Storm Arwen has caused chaos across the UK since last weekend with as many as one million homes and businesses affected by the severe weather.

Updates from the Energy Networks Association (ENA) suggest 15,000 customers remain without power.

Now the energy regulator, Ofgem, has said the usual £700 limit on compensation has been waived.

This means those who suffered power cuts can get up to £140 in payouts for every day they have no energy supply.

These payouts come from network operators - the firms which handle the physical side of supplying energy like fixing pipes.

These are different to energy and gas companies, like British Gas, who are the more public face of energy supply.

You can find your local network operator here .

Ofgem has also launched a review into network operators’ response to Storm Arwen.

An Ofgem statement said: "This will focus on the role of the network companies in maintaining the resilience of the system and their emergency response, including their communications with customers."

It will give an update on December 6.

Network operators have not just been sorting out power cuts, but also supplying hot food, along with the British Red Cross.

Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley said: "We understand this is a really worrying time for people who are without heat and power as the severity of Storm Arwen has hit homes and businesses in the North of England and Scotland.

“We accept the network companies have been working in challenging conditions, but until every home in Britain has power restored, that relentless effort must continue.

"We are launching a review into how the storm has been handled. We have strict rules on how network companies need to operate in these circumstances, and we will take action if needed."

Am I entitled to compensation after Storm Arwen?

If you've lost power in your home, your electricity supplier typically has 24 hours to restore your connection.

However, in cases of extreme storms, this deadline can be increased to 48 hours as energy companies are given more time to repair any damage.

According to Which?, the difference is defined by how many cases of supply outages are reported over 24 hours.

Energy regulator Ofgem said a storm is defined as "severe" if it causes more than 12 times the average daily number of faults.

If you're entitled to compensation, you'll receive £70, with a further £70 to be paid for each additional period of 12 hours in which supply is not restored.

This compensation is normally capped up to a maximum of £700 for a period of bad weather, but this has now been lifted.

The money should be paid to you automatically if you're on the priority register, according to Citizens Advice.

You can also claim through your local network company - they are responsible for fixing power cuts and responding to claims.
