149 patients have been discharged from Salford Royal Hospital after recovering from coronavirus

Health officials have revealed the number of people who have been discharged from Salford Royal Hospital after they recovered from Covid-19.

The Northern Care Alliance, which oversees the hospital, said a total of 149 patients who tested positive for coronavirus have been declared fit to return home since the pandemic began.

Among those to have recovered at Salford Royal is ex-Worsley MP Terry Lewis.

He was being treated after suffering a stroke when he contracted COVID-19.

Mr Lewis was moved to an isolation unit, where he received treatment before being allowed to return home.

According to the latest NHS England figures, 138 people have died from the virus at Salford Royal.

Six deaths were reported by the hospital on Wednesday, after two days when no new deaths were reported for the first time in three weeks.

There can be a delay of up to several days before a death is announced as hospitals have to process the information before notifying NHS England.

Across Greater Manchester, the number of deaths each day in NHS hospitals has appeared to be on a downward trend since a peak on 16th April, when 65 people lost their lives.

And across the UK, more than 21,000 people have died in hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

These figures are only for those people who lost their lives in hospital after testing positive for the virus and do not include coronavirus deaths in care homes or the community.

Separate statistics released yesterday by the ONS suggest nearly 60 per cent of deaths in Salford care homes earlier this month were linked to Covid-19.

A total of 558 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Salford so far.
