14 July: In brief and casting couch

• Following the abysmal performance of his directorial debut Honest, Dave Stewart would be well advised to get some practise in before he turns his hand to film-making once more. Luckily, his old friend Kevin Spacey has stepped in to help out. The 47-year-old millionaire musician told Now magazine : "I hired Kevin, who's a friend from the days I did the music for his film The Ref, to make fake advertisements for me. He has a great sense of humour and accepted just £60 a time to put himself through a send-up ad for coffee. It'll never be shown but it gave me a chance to experiment."

• Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger (pictured) have got engaged, reports the Sun today. Apparently, the comedian asked his girlfriend (who is currently filming The Diary of Bridget Jones in London) during a recent visit to the UK. A 'friend' of the actress is quoted as saying: "Renee is absolutely thrilled. She has a constant smile on her face." The two met last summer on the set of the Farrelly brothers' Me Myself and Irene, in which they both star.

• Only weeks before its release, writer-director Cameron Crowe's new movie finally has a title. The film - inspired by Crowe's own experiences as a teenage rock journalist for Rolling Stone in the early 70s - is to be called Almost Famous. During production, it was variously known as the Untitled Cameron Crowe Project, My Back Pages, The Uncool, and Stillwater (the name of the band the young journalist follows). The picture "was almost called 'Not Released' because we didn't have a title and we were getting very nervous," joked DreamWorks marketing chief Terry Press.

• British writer Jonathan Hales, currently working in Australia with George Lucas on the new Star Wars movie, will script the third instalment of The Mummy action-adventure franchise. Titled The Scorpion King, the film is expected to be a prequel to last year's surprise hit, which grossed more than $400m worldwide. Meanwhile, the sequel, The Mummy Returns, is currently filming in London, and is due for release in the US next May.

• Kirsten Dunst, last seen in The Virgin Suicides, is to star in Disney's At Seventeen, a romantic drama of a culture clash relationship.
