14 Hills restaurant: £5m 'forest in the sky' to open on Fenchurch Street

A £5 million “forest in the sky” with more than 100 trees and shrubs is to open in a restaurant in the heart of the City next month.

The venue, called 14 Hills, is one level below the largest public roof garden in London at the top of the 120 Fenchurch Street office block. Des Gunewardena, who runs D&D London dining group, said the 14th-storey site had no scope for an outdoor space so he decided to “have a terrace inside” instead.

The restaurant will have an evergreen canopy across the ceiling and among the 2,500 plants will be philodendrons, fiddle tree figs and alocasia palms.

D&D London will plant a tree with a reforestation project for every booking made today when lines go live ahead of the November 11 opening. The menu will focus on modern British cooking with Gallic influences from French-born executive chef Thomas Piat.
