14 countries at risk of being added to Scotland's quarantine list

Some 14 countries are at risk of being added to the UK quarantine list due to soaring rates of coronavirus.

There has been speculation that France will join Spain and Belgium in being struck off the ‘safe’ travel list after cases began to spike post- lockdown.

But recent analysis shows there are 14 countries with a higher rate than France that are currently on the quarantine-free list.

Those countries include:

  • Malta
  • Monaco
  • Gibraltar
  • The Netherlands
  • Denmark
  • Iceland
  • The Czech Republic
  • Switzerland
  • Poland
  • Aruba
  • Turks and Caicos
  • San Marino

  • The Faroe Islands

This means Scots returning home from those destinations may have to quarantine for 14 days if the situation gets worse.

Those countries all have a high rate of new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 people - close to or higher than that currently seen in France, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The move to take more countries off the list would follow a similar change to the rules on coming back from Spain.

Other countries have already been removed from the safe list - including Luxembourg - and those that could follow include Aruba, Turks and Caicos, Faroe Islands and San Marino.

It comes as health officials in France reported a 33% rise in the number of confirmed positive cases of Covid-19 last week.

New infections rates are increasing among all age groups, with people in the age 20 to 30 bracket being the most impacted.

There are fears that this could be signs of a second wave in the country, which has been absolutely destroyed by the pandemic.

France has the third highest number of deaths from Covid-19 in Europe, with more than 30,000 people dying from the virus.

Only the UK and Italy have reported higher death tolls.
