14 big lockdown changes coming into force next week in Scotland as countdown begins

In little over a week, Scotland will see the biggest easing of restrictions since the country was plunged into a nationwide lockdown more than four months ago.

Coronavirus rules, measures and restrictions have slowly been easing, with Nicola Sturgeon careful not to reopen the economy too quickly in a bid to suppress the deadly virus.

While small changes have already been lifted, Scots are looking forward to April 26 which will allow millions to regain some normality to every day life.

It comes after a handful of changes were brought forward last week, including an earlier date for the easing of travel restrictions and outdoor socialising.

The First Minister is expected to lay out the important details of the upcoming easing of restrictions in her lockdown announcement on Tuesday, April 20.

If all goes to plan, beer gardens and non-essential shops are just some of the places to welcome back customers at the end of April after months of closure.

Here are 14 big changes to expect next week in Scotland:

1. Beer gardens to serve alcohol

The highly-anticipated date will see the return of pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants which will be allowed to serve people alcohol and food outdoors in groups of six from six households.

There will be a 10pm curfew in line with Scottish licensing laws.

2. Beauty salons to reopen

Close-contact services like nail salons are expected to reopen for business on 26 April.

3. Diners can sit indoors in restaurants and cafes

Indoor hospitality venues will also be able to reopen, with food and non-alcoholic drinks served until 8pm for four people from no more than two households.

4. High street shops to reopen

Shoppers will be excited for all retail premises and non-essential shops to reopen from this date, including high street clothes stores.

5. More guests at weddings and funerals

The number of people allowed to attend a wedding or funeral rises to 50, with alcohol permitted at both.

6. Exercise at gyms and swimming pools

When it comes to exercise, indoor gyms and swimming pools will be able to reopen. This will just be for individual exercise, with group workouts and classes still banned.

7. Driving lessons to restart

Driving lessons and tests will resume for learner motorists.

8. Non-essential work can resume indoors

Non-essential work will be allowed to resume inside households from April 26.

9. Takeaway food collected indoors

Takeaways will be able to resume for normal service (PA)

- Takeaways will be able to resume for normal service, meaning people can go into the premises to collect food.

There will still be strict social distancing and face mask requirements indoors.

10. Scotland's level system to resume

It is also planned that Scotland returns to "modified" local levels system from this date, similar to the one imposed before the lockdown.

The entire country will initially move into Level 3 under the current plans - including island communities - allowing people to travel between areas.

11. Tourist accommodation can reopen

Tourist accommodation can also open from this date, meaning staycations will be allowed to resume if all goes to plan.

Hotels, self-contained accommodation, campsites and B&Bs may be able to reopen, subject to the upcoming lockdown review and local restrictions.

Self-catering accommodation is to be restricted in line with rules on indoor gathering.

12. Museums, galleries and libraries to allow visitors

All libraries, museums and galleries will be able to open to visitors.

13. Non-essential travel between Scotland, England and Wales

It is expected that non-essential journeys to other parts of the UK will be given the go-ahead from 26 April.

14. People shielding can return to work

This date is also significant for those shielding, as those on the list will be allowed to return to work, college, school or nursery.
