13 Reasons Why season 3 ending recap before show returns for final episodes

The third season was an explosive one for 13 Reasons Why.

The Netflix drama moved on somewhat from the suicide of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), however, the events that led to her death still loomed large over Liberty High School.

Clay Jensen ( Dylan Minnette ) and his friends had covered up the aborted mass school shooting from season 2 before they faced another shocking act of violence: the murder of Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice).

The previously popular jock had been exposed as a rapist who abused Hannah and gradually alienated more and more of those around him, creating quite a difficult whodunnit to solve as the list of suspects was long.

So, who killed Bryce Walker?

Secrets abound in 13 Reasons Why season 3 (Netflix)

The answer played a key role in the final episode and will have a huge impact on the final season in June.

*Spoiler alert for 13 Reasons Why season 3*

13 Reasons Why season 3 ending recap

The finale of season 3 revealed that Bryce Walker was murdered by Alex Standall.

Yep, the sweet Alex was revealed in flashbacks to have snapped and pushed Bryce to his death after thinking about all the pain he had previously caused.

Bryce had planned to meet rape victim Jessica at the docks after the homecoming dance to give her an incriminating tape where he confessed to his crimes and wrongdoings.

However, he was met by former friend Zach Dempsey, and the former lover of Bryce's other rape victim, Hannah Baker.

Zach assaulted Bryce and left him with a broken leg.

Following this, Jessica arrived with Alex to get the tape and helped Bryce to his feet - but this was when Alex snapped and pushed Bryce to his death in the water, where he drowned.

Elsewhere, Monty de la Cruz was finally punished for raping Tyler Down in season 2, after Jessica encouraged him to come forward.

Monty went to prison but was later murdered in his prison cell, enabling Clay and the gang to pin Bryce's murder on him and save Alex from prison.

Alex did confess to his father Deputy Standall, however, but he too covered for his son and burned evidence.

Yet, fellow student Winston knows the truth: Monty couldn't have killed Bruce and he was having sex with him at the time of Bryce's murder. Will he reveal the lie?

Meanwhile, former couple Justin and Jessica appeared to reconcile despite his ongoing battle with drug addiction.

Ani and Clay got together in 13 Reasons Why season 3 (Netflix)

Clay also found new love with the prickly and secretive newcomer Ani and the pair began dating at the end of the season.

In the final scenes, however, we saw fishermen come across the assault weapons that Tyler was planning to use in his aborted mass shooting.

Will all of the lies unravel in the final season?

13 Reasons Why season 4 is released on Netflix on June 5, 2020.
