The health ministry of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) has said that fighting in the capital Tripoli between rival militias has left 13 people dead.
The ministry said late Friday that 52 people were injured in the fighting which flared up Wednesday, shattering a UN-brokered ceasefire reached in September that ended hostilities in the city.
“Tripoli, after months of calm derived from the September ceasefire agreement, was two days ago once more rocked by renewed clashes,” UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame told the Security Council in a briefing on Friday.
“We have worked closely with all parties to stop breaches of the ceasefire from going any further,” he said.
Addressing the Council by video-conference from Tripoli, Salame said: “Civilians continue to live in fear of casualties of violent conflict.”
The earlier bout of violence in Tripoli killed nearly 100 people.
In a statement, GNA’s health ministry appealed to rival militiamen not to target ambulances and medics.
