Paramount has released the first trailer for Michael Bay’s movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, about the 2012 attack on the US compound in Benghazi, which resulted in the death of the US ambassador to Libya, J Christopher Stevens.

The film is adapted from Mitchell Zuckoff’s book about the attack entitled, 13 Hours: A Firsthand Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi. The film focuses on the security team sent in to try and rescue the American ambassador. Words on screen read: “When everything went wrong, six men had the courage to do what was right.”

Bay is best known for big-budget action movies like Armageddon (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), and the Transformers series. 13 Hours marks a very different turn for the director and is a move towards more serious themes.

No one could accuse Bay’s action films of subtlety, and even his most high-profile previous attempt at chronicling nationally significant events – Pearl Harbor – was labelled a “bang-and-boom action picture”. However, the trailer for 13 Hours, which re-creates a relatively recent event in American history, suggests that this time Bay may well have handled its subject with more sensitivity.
