If the idea of sitting at a desk and staring at a computer all day is something you find to be completely intolerable — or you're just not all that tech-savvy — we've got some good news: There are plenty of jobs out there that don't require your eyes to be glued to a screen 40 hours a week.
And the better news is that some of these pay really well.
Business Insider recently combed through the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a US Department of Labor database that compiles detailed information on hundreds of jobs to find positions where “using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information” is just a small part of the job.
O*NET ranks how important “interacting with computers” is to every profession, assigning each an importance score between 1 and 100.
We looked at the median annual pay for each job with a computer use importance score below 50 to find which ones typically pay more than $58,000 a year.
Here's what we found:
Postal service mail carrier
They sort mail for delivery and deliver mail on an established route.
Computer importance level: 19
Median annual pay: $58,280
Boilermaker
They construct, assemble, maintain, and repair stationary steam boilers and boiler house auxiliaries, and align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frame tanks or vats, following blueprints.
Computer importance level: 29
Median annual pay: $60,120
First-line supervisor of construction trades and extraction workers
They directly supervise and coordinate activities of construction or extraction workers.
Computer importance level: 44
Median annual pay: $62,070
Subway or streetcar operator
They operate subway or elevated suburban trains with no separate locomotive, or electric-powered streetcar, to transport passengers.
Computer importance level: 24
Median annual pay: $62,360
Signal or track switch repairer
They install, inspect, test, maintain, or repair electric gate crossings, signals, signal equipment, track switches, section lines, or intercommunications systems within a railroad system.
Computer importance level: 49
Median annual pay: $63,840
Farm or ranch manager
They plan, direct, or coordinate the management or operation of farms, ranches, greenhouses, aquacultural operations, nurseries, timber tracts, or other agricultural establishments.
Computer importance level: 41
Median annual pay: $64,170
Electrical power-line installer or repairer
They install or repair cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems. They may also erect poles and transmission towers.
Computer importance level: 41
Median annual pay: $66,450
Transportation vehicle, equipment, or systems inspector (except aviation)
They inspect and monitor transportation equipment, vehicles, or systems to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards.
Computer importance level: 30
Median annual pay: $70,820
Ship engineer
They supervise and coordinate activities of crew engaged in operating and maintaining engines, boilers, deck machinery, and electrical, sanitary, and refrigeration equipment aboard ship.
Computer importance level: 39
Median annual pay: $72,870
Acupuncturist
They provide treatment of symptoms and disorders using needles and small electrical currents. They may provide massage treatment and/or preventive treatments.
Computer importance level: 34
Median annual pay: $74,710
Ship, boat, or barge mate
They supervise or coordinate activities of crew aboard ships, boats, barges, or dredges.
Computer importance level: 48
Median annual pay: $76,780
Anesthesiologist assistant
They assist anesthesiologists in the administration of anesthesia for surgical and non-surgical procedures. They also monitor patient status and provide patient care during surgical treatment.
Computer importance level: 46
Median annual pay: $98,180
Obstetrician/gynecologist
These are physicians who provide medical care related to pregnancy or childbirth and those who diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases of women, particularly those affecting the reproductive system. They may also provide general medical care to women.
Computer importance level: 44
Median annual pay: $187,200
