Some people love to wear their slippers all year round, whether that's more of a flip-flop or a sandal style in the summer months, but as soon as the mercury drops come autumn, it's absolutely time to get out the cosy slippers.
Whether you like a mule, boot, sandal, or moccasin, there are a few common threads that run through the best slippers that we return to year after year. They're usually made from natural materials such as super-soft sheepskin, cosy wool or chic suede, they must be comfy and they need to be both well-designed and durable too.
Natural materials are an excellent choice for slippers, especially if you'll be wearing them all day, as sheepskin and wool are naturally insulating, breathable and moisture-wicking – so feet won't feel sweaty, just cosy.
Though sometimes slippers can easily fall into the drab and boring category, and there can be a fine line between something that looks like it belongs to your gran (top tip, avoid velcro straps at all cost – especially if it's mixed with tartan) and something that you can briefly pop outside in, or you won't feel embarrassed wearing while opening the door to the postie.
Across the high street and independent brands, these are the best slippers that will keep your trotters cosy through the chilly nights of winter and beyond.

How I tested

Each pair of slippers featured here has been thoroughly tested in my home, with comfort taking top priority. I focused on well-made, attractive slippers and also avoided novelty designs, instead selecting timeless styles built to last year after year. Shepherd of Sweden Beatrice slippers

Best: Womens' slippers overall
Sizes: 36-42
Colours: Chestnut, honey, stone
Why we love it
- Super soft
- Easy slip on
- Great design
- Natural materials
Take note
- Expensive
After sliding my feet into these slippers, they instantly felt cloudlike. They're made from the most supreme super-soft sheepskin, along with really supple suede. They're unbelievably cosy and snug, and the thick sheepskin shows what excellent quality they are.

I love the low-heel mule design, making them really easy to slip on – no Cindarella sister-like foot stuffing going on here – while also giving some warmth to the heels. The slightly square toe has thick patterned stitching, which has been done by hand, and takes its inspiration from Inuit-designed shoes. The sole is soft meaning they're absolutely not a pair to nip out to take the bins out in.
Shepherd of Sweden has the most extensive range of sheepskin and wool slippers I've seen, with many worthy styles, making it hard to choose just one pair. And if you fall in love with the brand, they also do proper outside boots and shoes too. They are shipped from Sweden, but all taxes are included in the slipper price.

Yoko wool slipper

Best: Budget slippers for women
Sizes: 4-5, 6-6.5, 7-8
Colours: Grey/cream, purple/cream, pink/cream
Why we love it
- Cosy
- Affordable
- Natural materials
Take note
- Chunky
After putting on these slippers, I instantly felt like I was walking on clouds. They're bouncy, snug, comfy and fully envelope feet in wooly warmth, that you won't want to take off. I'm a size 8 and tried the 7-8, which fits well.

They're one of the chunkiest slippers I've tested, but don't feel novelty at all. They win extra points as they're made entirely from wool. They come in a two-tone colourway – grey and cream, which feels very winter appropriate and adds to the cloud-like look of the slippers. However, they're also available in purple and cream, or pink and cream.

Boden contrast sole mule slipper

Best: Slippers for women with a sturdy sole
Sizes: EU 36-42
Colours: Cream, pink
Why we love it
- Sturdy sole
- Great design
- Made in Spain
- True to size
Take note
- Mostly synthetic materials
Every year, Boden comes up with fun designs and mixes them with its signature pops of bright colours that often become cult favourites and constantly sell out – and I think these might be one of those products. These slippers are a fun riff on a cork-style clog and I love the sturdy sole, which is made from pink rubber with a slight undulating texture.

They're great fitting, so take your normal size and you can also pick them up in a pale pink with burgundy soles colourway. They're made in Spain too, which is usually renowned for its quality manufacturing, but it's a shame they're made with synthetic materials.

Fatface folddown tan sheepskin slippers

Best: Full-foot slippers for women
Sizes: 3-8
Colours: Tan
Why we love it
- Well made
- Good price-point
- Natural materials
Take note
- Quite chunky
This year, Fatface has an excellent selection of well-designed slippers, especially for those among us who love cosy sheepskin.

This folddown pair feels like the cosiest and snuggest full slippers I've tried. Usually, I'm more of a fan of a slip-on slipper style, but these full slippers are surprisingly easy to pull on compared to some others we tried. Plus, they’re cosy and have superbly thick sheepskin inside. They also have a very solid sole, so can be worn outside. Best of all, they look and feel far more luxurious than their sub-£50 price tag suggests.

Onaie aubergine sheepskin moccasin slippers

Best: Polish slippers for women
Sizes: 3-8
Colours: Aubergine
Why we love it
- Made in Poland
- Hand stitching
- True to size
These moccasin-style full slippers are a pair I've had for years and keep returning too. They're made in Poland and feature a wide brim of sheepskin, a colourful star-shaped motif over the toe that's hand stitched, as is around the slipper's edge, too.

They're a good fit size-wise, so order your usual size. They have solid soles but are suede-like and do get stained, but are fine for popping outside if it's not wet. Also available in mule styles, or with cream, white or even pink sheepskin with varying coloured uppers and stitching motif. Or if you're feeling brave, there's a lucky dip option where you're sent a random colourway for just £28 – a real bargain.

John Lewis curly shearling borg buckle strap clogs

Best: Clog style slippers for women
Sizes: 3-8
Colours: Taupe
Why we love it
- Warm and cosy
Take note
- Slightly heavy
- Might need to size up
Warm and snug, these slippers lean into the clog trend.
The slippers feature an adjustable strap to help with fit across the top of the foot, but I found them harder to slide into, compared with some other styles, as they’re quite compact height-wise. This means you may want to try sizing up to get the ideal fit when it comes to these stylish, on-trend teddy-bear boucle mules.

Desmond & Dempsey Soleia leopard multi

Best: Quilted slippers for women
Sizes: 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 42/43
Colours: Three patterns available
Why we love it
- Comfy
- Lightweight
- Travel-friendly
- Made in Portugal
Take note
- Soles aren’t very thick
I like the quilted design of these slip-on mules, which are comfy, cosy and lightweight – making them easy to pack in a suitcase if you can't bear to be away without slippers. And they come with a branded cotton drawstring bag to travel with, too. I tried the 40-41 size which were plenty spacious enough for my size UK8 feet.

I really like that they don't have chunky or plastic soles. Instead, the felt-like soles are reinforced on the font of the foot and the heel, and also have understated branding, which looks very chic. Inside has a cosy soft bottom and they have a decent spring to them considering the soles aren't very thick. They're also made in Portugal, another country known for its better manufacturing standards.

Celtic & Co Venetian slippers

Best: Slim style slippers
Sizes: 3-9
Colours: Blue, dusky pink, merlot, spice
Why we love it
- Slim style
- Very soft
- Made in the UK
- Good sustainable credentials
Take note
- Slim style may not be for everyone
- Expensive
For lovers of ballet flats, these are the slippers for you. Featuring soft sheepskin, the brand's USP is that all its sheepskin is made in the UK. To be more specific, they're made in the brand's workshop in Newquay, Cornwall, where it's been making sheepskin slippers for 35 years. It even offers a re-soling service for its sheepskin boots. Plus, Celtic & Co supports the Campaign for Wool initiative, championing the benefits of using this natural fibre over synthetic fibres at a time when wool has such a low value.

This slipper style was created after the brand says it listened to its customers, who wanted a classic slipper with an added contemporary edge. They're easy to get on, have a soft sole with added non-slip sections, and are perfect for people who prefer a slimmer style, but still want the cosiness of sheepskin.

Loaf shearins slippers

Best: Slippers for women made with Australian shearing
Sizes: 4-10
Colours: Cream
Why we love it
- Super soft
- Well-priced
- Premium feel
Best known for its sumptuous sofas and mid-century inspired quality furniture, Loaf has branched out into homeware from mugs to bed linen, as well as slippers and socks.

These cream-coloured slip-on mules are made from Australian shearling and are oh-so soft. Inside is also made from a shearling wool with a layer of foam, giving a little spring, too. There's a fairly sturdy rubber sole, so you can pop outside if needs be in them, without the worry of getting soggy feet. They have a great generous fit, so no need to size up, unless you want to combine them with the brand's chunky wool socks too. Coming in a branded cotton bag, they feel very good quality and luxurious yet feel quite well priced.

Fatface snug Lewis mule

Best: Mule slippers for women
Sizes: 6.5-11.5
Colours: Tan
Why we love it
- Unisex
- Can be worn outside
I've included another pair from Fatface as the brand just has so many good options, this snug mule design is undeniably inspired by the hit creation from Ugg that rocketed the brand back into the limelight with Gen Z.

With a low-cut ankle design, these are a little more understated than Uggs' as they don't have any brightly coloured stitching around the edges. They're soft, easy to get on, and make a great unisex pair. They've also got solid and grippy soles and can be worn outside too.

Best: Platform mule slippers for women
Sizes: 3-8
Colours: Chestnut, brown, pink
Why we love it
- Classic style
- Soft sheepskin
Take note
- Chunky sole my not be for everyone
An update on perhaps one of the most classic slipper styles, this slip-on mule has a sheepskin inner and suede outer with a sheepskin cuff, and a chunky platform sole, giving it a more contemporary feel.

Though it's not too high, so don't let that put you off. They're soft and cosy, easy to get on and off, with a soft sheepskin insole too.

What are the best women’s slippers?
With so much sheepskin, shearling, suede, and general cosiness, it's hard to choose between so many worthy options. But, the Shepherd of Sweden Beatrice slippers did really stand out for their sumptuously soft sheepskin, ease of getting on and off, great design and their hand-made stitching.
For something that's more of a hybrid that can be worn outside too, the Boden contrast sole mules are hardwearing, and will certainly last a long time.
