13,000 sign petition to save Glasgow-born singer from being deported by Home Office

A petition calling for a Glasgow-born jazz singer to be saved from deportation by the Home Office has received nearly 13,000 siganatures.

35-year-old Bumi Thomas’s parents are from Nigeria and arrived in the UK at the end of the Windrush Generation era. The musician received a letter from the Home Office last month telling her she had 14 days to leave the country .

Bumi was born in Glasgow in June 1983 - just months after a change to the automatic right of citizenship for children of parents from former British colonies.

However, her parents who arrived in the UK in the early 70s, were unaware they should register their daughter under the British Nationality Act.

Now, a petition has been launched calling on Bumi to be allowed to remain in the country.

Since it was created last week, 12,958 people have signed the petition supporting Rumi and defending her nationality, which she believes to be British.

A statement in the petition reads: "Bumi Thomas is a Jazz artist born in Glasgow in 1983. Scotland is her birth nation.

"She is Scottish. The UK authorities deem it appropriate to seek her deportation within 14 days. This is not acceptable by fellow Scots."

According to the letter delivered to Bumi revealed that her right to remain in the UK had ended because she had split from her partner, who was a British citizen.

A previous statement from the Home Office read: "All immigration applications are considered on their individual merits and on the basis of the evidence available."
