£215,000 McLaren seized as hundreds turn out for huge car meet

A new McLaren worth £215,000 was seized by police as hundreds turned out for a car meet in Southport.

The black super car was seized by the police under Section 59, as the vehicle was being driven in an anti-social manner.

The owner, a 30-year-old man from the Liverpool area, had been issued with a Section 59 warning previously and so his vehicle was seized for a repeat offence.

Police were called, on Sunday, after reports that hundreds of people had gathered at Marine Drive for a 'static' meet.

Officers spoke to numerous drivers, issued eight warnings under Section 59 of the Police and Reform Act 2002, and conducted roadside breath tests and drugs wipes.

Cars from across the area are believed to have travelled into Southport for the gathering and pictures of the meet show crowds of people stood in the street.

Inspector Carl McNulty: “We know that driving in an anti-social manner can cause significant nuisance, stress and danger to our communities and that’s why we continue to work proactively disrupt those who behave in such a manner.

“We hope that the seizure yesterday shows that if you are issued with a Section 59 warning because of your behaviour and you ignore us, there are no excuses, we will take your vehicle away.

“Rest assured that this manner of driving will not be tolerated on the roads of Merseyside, and we will continue to respond to concerns raised by the public.”

The car meet is the second of it's kind to happen in Southport in the last few weeks, with the last meet seeing a car almost crash into spectators as groups of people were broken up by police.

Anyone with information on anti-social behaviour in their area can DM @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’.
