12-year-old girl taken to hospital after a crash between a bicycle and a car in Newport at the weekend

A 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital following a crash between a bicycle and a car in Newport over the bank holiday weekend.

Police have confirmed the girl was taken to University Hospital of Wales in Heath, Cardiff after the collision which happened on Lighthouse Road just before 5pm on Sunday, May 2.

Police and ambulance both attended the scene, and the girl's condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

Last weekend saw busy roads across many parts of Wales as people travelled to beauty spots and holiday accommodation for the bank holiday.

There was particular disruption on Monday as gusts of wind of up to 80mph were seen in some areas, coinciding with the end of the bank holiday rush. Read more about that here.

The effects of the conditions were still being felt this morning with part of the M48 along the Severn Bridge closed due to high winds.

A spokesperson from Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a collision involving a bicycle and a car at about 4.45pm on Lighthouse Road, Newport on Sunday, May 2.

"A 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital. She was not in a life threatening condition."

A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called to the Lighthouse Road at 4.40pm on Sunday 2 May following reports of a cyclist involved in a collision with a car.

"We responded with one emergency ambulance and our Emergency Medical Transport and Retrieval Service. One patient was taken to University Hospital Wales, Cardiff by road for further treatment."
