12-year-old Emer McKee breaks her own 5k world record for age group

Belfast girl Emer McKee, 12, has broken the 5k world record for her age group.

Emer previously set the world record In April but smashed it on Sunday at the Lisburn Festival of Running with a time of 16 minutes 27 seconds.

Speaking after her first record breaking run in April, Emer said: "I just try to run as fast as I can".

From young age she used to take part in park runs before joining Willowfield Temperance Harriers running club in Belfast at the age of nine.

Prior to her run in April, the 5k world record for her age group was held by Annabella Veltcheva when she ran a time of 17 minutes 16 seconds in Florida.

Sundays event was organised by ChampionChip Ireland, who organise running events all over Ireland.

They said in a social media post last night: "We'd like to extend a big congratulations to 12-year-old Emer McKee.

"Well done Emer, Keep it up!"

To add to her success Emer won the under-13 1500 meters race at the Mary Peters track in Belfast on Thursday.
