A 12-year-old boy was repeatedly stabbed while playing on a bouncy castle in what police described as a “despicable” attack.

The young boy, who was rushed to hospital, was at his eight-year-old sister’s birthday party in Liverpool when two attackers, thought to be men in their late teens or early 20s, intruded the event.

According to witnesses, the men cornered the child before carrying out the attack and then walking off down Southport Road in the city’s Bootle area, the Liverpool Echo reported.

Following the incident on Wednesday, which police have said is “not random,” a 20-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection to the attack.

The boy’s family told the Echo that he is currently in hospital, needs surgery, and is expected to remain there for a few nights.

Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney said: “Although it is pleasing to have made a quick arrest, our investigation continues and we’re gathering all information to piece together the circumstances.

“We understand the concern that such an incident has in the community. This was not a random attack and we believe that all involved were from the local area.

“Nonetheless, for a young person to be assaulted is despicable, so it’s vitally important that anyone with details to assist comes forward, either directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers, and we will take action.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting ref. 21000220899 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
