12-year-old boy escaped from a burning home with a dog after an unattended chip pan caught fire

A 12-year-old boy escaped from a burning home with a dog after an unattended chip pan caught fire in Wigan.

Firefighters rushed to the scene at about 4pm on Monday after the blaze broke out in the kitchen of the home on Bickershaw Lane.

Witnesses reported seeing multiple police, ambulance and fire crews outside the property during the incident.

Crews from Hindley, Atherton, Leigh and Wigan used two hose reels, four breathing apparatus and one ventilation fan to extinguish the fire.

They were at the scene for about 90 minutes, a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said.

Smoke alarms were fitted in the home.

It is understood the boy was taken to hospital as a 'precautionary check'.

The fire service spokesman confirmed the chip pan had been 'left unattended when the fire broke out'.
