Gloria Steinem, Simone de Beauvoir, Malala Yousafzai, and Emma Watson are some of the most renowned feminists who have fought tirelessly for gender equality over the years.
From campaigning for female education and speaking out against gendered oppression, to reminding society of the importance of reproductive freedom and economic independence, these women have helped shape the feminist movement to what it is today and have inspired generations to champion women’s rights.
However, as the definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of the equality of the sexes”, it’s vital to recognise the importance of male feminists too, who speak out in the name of equal pay, work, and recognition.
Men like tennis champion Andy Murray, who regularly calls out sexism in his sport, whether that’s talking about his interest in getting more women involved in tennis or speaking in favour of financial parity between male and female athletes.
“We know that when women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them – their families, their communities, and their countries,” the father-of-one said in one of his most memorable speeches during the 2013 Chime For Change Concert.
“This is not just about women. We men need to recognise the part we play, too. Real men treat women with dignity and give them the respect they deserve.”
