12-hour-long police stand-off with man on roof ends in arrest

A man who climbed onto the roofs of a row of houses in Bolton was arrested after a 12-hour-long stand-off with police.

Dozens of armed police, riot officers, firefighters and paramedics attended the scene on Wednesday after reports that a man armed with an axe had climbed onto the roof of a home in Maple Close, Kearsley, at around 8.30am.

Concerned residents emerged from their houses, with some saying they were evacuated by police, as the incident continued well into the afternoon.

A drone appeared in the air along with a tall CCTV-like camera, understood to have been operated by police, while heavily protected officers in stab vests patrolled on the ground.

The man was seen walking around on the adjoining roofs of houses on the road.

He appeared to have a high-visibility jacket on.

Reinforcements arrived for the emergency services.

At its height, the response included a fire service welfare vehicle, an unmarked police van, a police riot van, and two fire engines.

The stand-off finally came to an end at around 9pm.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aggravated burglary.

No injuries were reported and residents of evacuated properties have been allowed to return to their homes.

Chief Inspector Chris Boyd, GMP Force Critical Incident Manager, said: "I'd like to thank emergency services colleagues for their assistance during the course of the day.

"I'd also like to thank the public for their patience while this incident was brought to a safe conclusion."

The M.E.N has contacted the North West Ambulance Service for information.
