A 12-hour Cyclathon Challenge in Dumfries has raised more than £2000 for charity.
Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club organised the event held at the Tesco at Cuckoo Bridge.
The aim was to complete a distance equivalent to the return journey between the supermarket’s stores in Dumfries and Stranraer – 137 miles – to raise funds for Prostate Buddies D&G and Prostate Scotland.
And thanks to generous sponsorship and the support of shoppers they managed to collect a total of £2,069.
Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club President Peter Atkinson was delighted with the outcome.
He said: “A huge thank you, firstly to Tesco’s Dumfries for the wonderful support in allowing the event within the store and secondly to the shoppers on the day for their generous donation.”
The challenge for the Ride for Prostate used a static bike within the foyer of Tesco taking it in turns to cycle the distance and back from the two stores.
During the 12-hour marathon the intrepid cyclists managed to smash their target by covering 267.2 miles in total and received generous donations from shoppers.
According to Mr Atkinson it could not have happened without the partnering organisations involved and particularly the people giving their time and effort in collecting and cycling for the event.
He expressed thanks to Tesco and the store’s community champion, Anne Croucher, the Rotary Club of Dumfries, Cycling Dumfries and the 710 Cycling Club and representatives of the Buddies who attended on the day and handed out advice to the public on prostate disease.
Prostate Buddies D&G is a support group based in Dumfries, to help men who have recently been diagnosed with, or are concerned about prostate disease or prostate cancer.
Every member of the group is qualified in a special way in that they have all had or have prostate cancer and have been through subsequent treatments.
The group is also assisted by Prostate Scotland in their work, but their service to this region could not be carried out without public donations.
The Buddies group is manned entirely by volunteers who want to help other men come to terms with their diagnosis and talk them through what happens next in terms of treatment and further support.

The money will go to good use for Prostate Awareness and including sponsoring our new radio campaign.”
