12 facts about Outlander you might not know

It's the hit show that has catapulted its Scots lead and shooting locations into stardom, and has seen its legion of fans eagerly await the season five finale in the US which aired on May 10th.

Now, season six still in production, here are some surprising facts about the Starz hit that might help to fill the gap.

1. Sam Heughan made his name playing one of Scotland's most famous brewers

Sam became a well-known face on the TV thanks to his role as Hugh Tennent in the Tennents lager advert (Tennents)

As well as playing Livingston FC footballer Andrew Murray in River City, Sam made his name as Tennent's founder Hugh Tennent in the Glasgow-based lager producer's ads.

2. Speaking of drink, Sam has his own whisky

Dubbed The Sassenach, it's named after the pet name he gives Jamie's love interest Claire on the show.

3. Not to be outdone, co-star Caitriona Balfe has released her own Scottish gin

The Irish star, who leads from the front on the show, has released an exciting Scottish gin called Forget Me Not, with profits going to supporting the Arts.

4. Sam and the other actors in kilts often go true Scotsmen on the set

Sam joked in a recent US radio interview that it's very "comfortable", adding that it's one of the joys of wearing a kilt while filming.

5. The show has its own cookbook

Canadian author Theresa Carle-Sanders wrote Outlander Kitchen with recipes inspired by the Show.

She was forced to defend her inclusion of modern American recipes alongside traditional Scottish ones in the book, after several high profile Scottish chefs said it might give people the wrong view of Scottish food.

Carle-Sanders quite rightly explained that the criticisms have stemmed from a mild confusion over the plot of the books which takes place in both Scotland and the US.

6. The books were inspired by an episode of Doctor Who

Author Diana Gabaldon told Scotland Now that she was inspired by 1969 Highland themed episode named War Games.

She admitted she was inspired after seeing the Tardis land in 1746 Scotland as Bonnie Prince Charlie faced defeat at the Battle of Culloden.

She said: “I was thinking a historical novel might be the easiest kind of book to write for practice when I happened to see a really old Doctor Who re-run.

“Jamie struck me with his attitude and male gallantry and I thought the kilt was rather fetching.

“I was thinking about that the next day in church and decided to set the book in Scotland in the 18th century.

“I had no plot, nothing, just this notion of a man in a kilt.

“I called my man Jamie but otherwise he has nothing in common with Jamie from Doctor Who.”

7. Outlander has caused a boom in tourism

Tourism in Scotland has benefited massively from the show.

The Outlander Effect and Tourism paper stated that attractions that appear in Outlander have seen visitor numbers soar by 67 percent since 2013, from 887,000 to 1.5million (pre-pandemic).

8. A young William Wallace grew up to be brutally killed on Outlander

James Robinson was just 10 years old when he played the young version of Mel Gibson's William Wallace in Braveheart.

He gained the role of Greg Edgars in 2016 and we all know what happened next.

8. A Scots chocolatier made an Outlander costume almost entirely out of chocolate to celebrate the show

Edinburgh chocolatiers The Chocolate Tree were inspired to make this costume almost entirely from chocolate. (The Chocolate Tree)

Expert chocolatiers Alastair and Friederike Gower of Chocolate Tree were inspired by the hit TV show when considering their Chocolate Show London 2016 entry.

The outfit consists of a kilt, boots, socks, hat, feathers, broach, sporran, sword and even shirt buttons all made from organic dark chocolate and took two months to complete.

9. The show has strong links with Game of Thrones but actor Sam Heughan failed to win a part in the other show despite auditioning seven times.

Several key Outlander stars also had parts in Game of Thrones, all of course that is, Sam Heughan, though not for the want of trying.

The Scots actor admitted in an interview with Vulture in 2016, that he was desperate for a part in the show joking that he'd auditioned for the parts of Loras Tyrell (eventually played by look-alike Finn Jones), Renly Baratheon and even several members of the Night's Watch.

10. The theme song is closely linked to the Battle of Culloden

11. Diana Gabaldon had never visited Scotland before the books

Instead she used pictures and descriptions she found in books, to build up a detailed image in her head of her setting.

She has of course been to Scotland several times since the show became a hit.

12. The idea for Jamie was also inspired by a man who may have actually fought at Culloden

Diana has said she took inspiration from 1960s book the Prince in the Heather, which details the account of how 19 wounded Jacobites hid in a farmhouse after the battle.

Eventually executed by the Red Coats, only one of the survived. "They were taken out and shot. One man, a Fraser of the Master of Lovat’s regiment, escaped the slaughter."

Diana eventually references this in Outlander book Voyager.
