12.3million drivers running risk of £1,000 fine thanks to Covid delay

Drivers are being warned to check when their MoT is due and book in as soon as possible as 12.3million cars will need to be tested before the end of this year.

In September alone 3.37 million cars will see their MoT expire, followed by 3.29 million in October and 3.12 million in November.

An additional 783,000 cars will be due to have their first MoT by the end of this year, having reached the third anniversary of their registration.

Paul Evans, head of Co-op Motor Insurance, said: “We’re urging motor vehicle owners to check their vehicle’s MOT and if it’s due in the next three months, to get it booked in with a reputable mechanic as soon as they can.

“Due to last year’s national lockdown, between March and July, cars, motorcycles and vans were given a six month extension to their MoT.

"Over twelve months on, we could see a huge glut of people rushing to get their car through testing and figures from the DVSA would support this, with almost a third of all the vehicles in the UK will see their MOT expire by New Year’s Eve.”

The MoT test is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in the United Kingdom. Drivers can be fined up to £1,000 for using a vehicle without a valid MOT. Newer vehicles must have an MOT on the third anniversary of their registration, and then every 12 months.

Co-op Insurance’s Car Care service, in partnership with Fixter, offers a convenient MOT and car servicing option for car owners. Vehicles are picked up at home and dropped off at a location chosen by the owner, with prices starting from £39.
