12,000 pieces of Jollibee's 'Chickenjoy' sold in one week as Newcastle fried chicken restaurant is a hit with city students

Fast-food chain Jollibee has already become a firm favourite in Newcastle since it welcomed diners for the first time last week.

Eager customers queued up outside the Northumberland Street restaurant from as early as 5.45am on Thursday, November 4 to be the first in line to try its fried chicken.

Around 200 customers were stood outside before the doors even opened at 10am and since then Jollibee bosses say the demand hasn't let up.

In just seven days, the Newcastle branch has sold more than 12,000 pieces of 'Chickenjoy', the chain's signature crispy fried chicken.

Adam Parkinson, business head of Jollibee Europe, said: “Since opening our Newcastle store last week we have had the pleasure of serving devoted Jollibee fans as well as local customers discovering us for the first time.

"The majority of our customers have been first-time locals who we have been excited to welcome through our doors.

"Chicken burgers have been a local favourite and we’ve also sold over 12,000 pieces of Chickenjoy, our signature crispy fried chicken."

Founded in the Philippines, the chain has become popular around the world for its chicken and spaghetti dishes with a 'Southeast Asian twist'.

Jollibee says that its Newcastle branch has been most popular among the city's university students who have heard about the chain on TikTok.

"A lot of our new customers have actually been local university students who came across us on their 'TikTok For You' page," Adam said.

"As a thank you for their support, we’re now offering students 10% off all in-app purchases when they download and order via our JolliApp.”
