'11th hour furlough extension' not enough warns Glasgow leader as delay costs thousands of jobs

Thousands of workers have already lost their jobs because of the delay in extending the furlough scheme, Glasgow's council leader insists.

Susan Aitken says the last minute decision to continue to the programme until December still isn't enough, and has demanded it is extended until spring 2021 at the earliest.

She spoke out after Boris Johnson announced the news when he imposed a second lockdown in England because of soaring coronavirus infections.

And while Chancellor Rishi Sunak later confirmed the extension will apply in Scotland, Councillor Aitken cautioned, it's still not enough.

Posting on Twitter last night, she said: "Talk about 11th hour. Thousands of jobs already lost in anticipation of the scheme ending could have been saved if this had been done months ago as the Scottish Government and so many others begged for.

"Now please do the right thing Rishi Sunak and extend till next spring at the earliest."

The furlough scheme, which  was scheduled to end today, provides workers with 80 per cent of their total salary.

And last night Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon welcomed the extension, but called for more clarity over its terms.

Writing on Twitter, she said: "This is good and expected. But a key question - is it only available during the period of English lockdown? Or will it be available in event a devolved gov thinks it necessary to have tougher restrictions at a later stage?"
