118 new Covid-19 cases in Ahmedabad, 225 in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: The city on Friday recorded 118 new Covid cases, the second consecutive day with more than 100 daily cases.

The tally accounted for 52% of the state’s daily cases at 225. For Gujarat too, it was the second consecutive day of more than 200 daily cases.

After the discharge of 81 patients, there were 641 active cases in Ahmedabad and 1,186 in Gujarat.

The other cases included 25 from Vadodara city, 22 from Surat city, 10 from Surat district, eight from Anand, five from Rajkot city and Kutch, and four each from Rajkot and Valsad districts among others. Out of 33 districts, only nine have zero active cases.

The patients on ventilators doubled from three on Thursday to six on Friday.

City-based experts said that the screening of people on entry and exit points in the city can help identify cases early.

“The cases are on the rise as many are going undetected. Since it is the Omicron variant of Covid, the infectivity is high, but the severity and mortality are low. However, it’s still early to say that this is the fourth wave of the pandemic. The elderly and children should be more vigilant,” said a city-based physician.

In the past 24 hours, Gujarat vaccinated 7,668 persons for the first dose and 33,439 for the second.

In all, 5.4 crore individuals have been administered the first and 5.3 crore the second dose of Covid vaccine. The state administered booster doses to 37,154 persons, taking the total to 37.48 lakh. The country recorded 12,847 new Covid cases and 14 deaths.
