Masazo Nonaka, who lives in the town of Ashoro, Hokkaido, has been officially recognized as the world's oldest man by Guinness World Records. He is 112.
He received an official certificate of the record at his home on Tuesday. "Thank you," he said with a smile.
According to the town government, Nonaka was born on July 25, 1905. After working in agriculture and forestry, he managed a Japanese-style hot spring inn called "Nonaka Onsen," which his parents had started at the foot of Mt. Meakan. He and his wife had two sons and three daughters.
Nonaka wakes up at 7 a.m. every day, reading a newspaper and enjoying sumo programs or opera on TV. He likes sweets. In the ceremony at which he was presented the certificate, he was all smiles as he ate cake, saying, "It was delicious."
