110 new flats will be built on site of former social club in Burley

Plans to create a block of more than 100 flats on the site of a former rugby club have been approved by Leeds City Council decision-makers this week.

The former site of Burley Sports and Social Club in Burley Road is now set to become a five-storey block of 110 flats after a meeting of the council’s South and West Plans Panel.

It follows a previous incarnation of the plans coming to the panel back in January, including 143 flats over seven storeys, but members advised this was too large and called on the size to be reduced.

The previous application had also strayed into an area of public open space – the new plans are now outside this area and housed completely within land allocated for housing.

Panel member Coun Denise Regan (Lab) told the committee: “It’s a fantastic scheme, it gives a really good green space. It looks good too, and it has been derelict for a long time and it is a really good use for mix of flats.”

Coun Sharon Hamilton (Lab) added: “I’m really pleased with all the changes that have been taken into consideration, with regards to reducing the car park and more green space.”

The plans were approved by the panel.
