11-year-old pulled over for speeding in Texas; mom confirms she gave the OK

DALLAS _ When police in Pasadena, just southeast of Houston, pulled over a car for driving 49 mph in a 35-mph zone last week, they found an 11-year-old girl behind the wheel.

The girl, who was driving home from her aunt's house Friday with her 10-year-old brother in the car, said it wasn't the first time she had driven _ though it was the first without an adult in the car.

According to Vance Mitchell of the Pasadena Police Department, the aunt asked the mother, 25-year-old Maria DeJesus Lopez, if it would be OK for the girl to drive her and her brother home.

Lopez consented, he said.

When police took the children home, Lopez confirmed that she gave her daughter permission to drive, police said.

Lopez has been charged with two counts of child endangerment and is free on $3,000 bond. The aunt has not been charged.
