11 Welsh place names people of Newport have made their own

In Newport, many of us would probably admit that we could do with brushing up on our Welsh.

Since our days spent passively going through our lessons in school, some of us probably haven't used our Welsh as much as we should.

But what about the places we've actually lived our whole lives?

Whether you're in Lliswerry or Allt-yr-yn, there's a good chance you've been pronouncing where you live the same way for your whole life - and you wouldn't be wrong either.

But for many areas around Newport, how it's pronounced today is quite different from from the traditional Welsh pronunciation.

There's also many historic local dialects - such as Gwenhwyseg in South East Wales - from where place names could have been derived.

Check out these place names and how they are pronounced in Welsh - and see how many you'd get right!
