11 shot dead at teenager's birthday party in Mexico

At least 11 people have been killed in a shooting at a teenager's 15th birthday party in southern Mexico.

Guerrero state governor Hector Astudillo Flore, said the shooting occurred during a "quinceanera" coming-of-age celebration in Cundancito.

"There was a problem at a 15th birthday party, and according to the information we have, 11 people were killed," he said.

After the shooting, authorities were met by gunfire when they tried to reach the area, the BBC reports.

Guerrero, which is one of the poorest states in Mexico, has seen an increase in drug-related abductions and homicides over the last few years.

At least 324 people were murdered there between October and December last year, with most deaths being related to the drug trade, according to figures compiled by the La Jornada newspaper.

Two years ago, 43 students disappeared after being attacked by municipal police and delivered to a drug cartel.
