11 pictures to prove Roath Park is the best place to see autumn leaves and sights

When it comes to seeing autumn leaves, Cardiff has the best parks possible to soak up the seasonal sights and colours.

After all, there's Bute Park with its Arboretum with hundreds of different trees and Heath Park which is perfect for dog walking.

But standing out above them all is Roath Park, a Victorian park with a surrounding lake that is home to different species of wildlife and even terrapins.

Here's our favourite pictures of Roath Park - and what makes it the best place to enjoy this autumn.

Surrounded by fiery red autumn leaves, the Roath Park playground is the perfect place to entertain kids, or sit for a takeaway coffee from the café Terra Nova, and while away the hours.

2. Gorgeous reflections on the lake

Roath Lake is spectacular in any season but nothing quite beats the autumn colours reflecting off the surface.

The lake, which was first filled in 1893, is home to hundreds of wildlife species.

Roath Lake is stunning at any time of day but especially and first and last light.

The colours bounce off the lake and the trees appear darker against the sky - it is magical.

5. Dogs playing in leaves

This is not exclusive to Roath Park, but Roath Park is a popular walking route for dog owners around Cardiff and you are guaranteed to see some playing in the leaves if you visit in autumn.

6. The spectrum of colours

The blue of the lake set against the autumn leaves really brings out the intensity of colours.

You will see all the usual autumn colours to be expected but intensified. Try collecting leaves next time you go to see for yourself.

7. Feed the geese

Feeding the wildlife seems like an autumnal thing to do, it fits the cosy, at one with nature aesthetic.

The Roath Lake geese are known to be greedy - feed one and you will be surrounded.

8. Go for a bike ride

Why not hop on your bike and ride around the lake? If the walkway is too busy, nip up onto the road above and cycle along.

It is tight enough to the park that you will get the same views, if not better.

9. Leaves everywhere

On the trees, on the ground, falling, the leaves will surround you.

Catch Roath Park at the end of autumn for the particularly red leaves making a carpet on the ground.

10. Visit the Terrapins and Koi

You can take a shelter from the cold by visiting Roath Park's Conservatory, which has lots of wildlife including tiny Terrapins and Koi fish in the pond.

Entry is a small fee and you can walk around the indoor jungle.

11. Visit Elvis duck

All the Roath Park regulars know who Elvis duck is. You may have a different nickname for him but he's the same duck.

He's usually found playing in the weeds at the bottom end of the lake. It is the norm for passers by to stop and point him out and watch him for a few moments.
