11 of the biggest underdogs to win NFL games

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets are enormous underdogs in their games Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots, respectively. There may be a slim chance for both teams, but other teams have overcome significant, um, odds to post victories. Going to mix in some Super Bowl memories, too.

Super Bowl III Jets

USA TODAY Sports

Okay, so the Jets were in the AFL in 1968. Still, Joe Namath & Co. stunned the Baltimore Colts, 16-7, as 18-point underdogs. The game that changed the face of football forever.

A year later people still were not convinced about the upstart AFL. The Chiefs were 12-point underdogs to the Minnesota Vikings. All KC did was go out and dominate in a 23-7 victory.

Super Bowl XXXII Broncos

John Elway and the Broncos were 11.5-point underdogs against the Green Bay Packers. Mattered not as Denver went on to a 31-24 victory.

Super Bowl XXXVI Patriots

The “Greatest Show on Turf” was going to steamroll Tom Brady and his New England Patriots. Oh, what 20/20 vision would do for those who decided to give the 14 points. Adam Vinatieri kicked the game-winning field goal in a 20-17 shocker.

Super Bowl XLII Giants

Tom Brady and the Patriots wind up on the other side of the final score as Eli Manning and Big Blue post a stunning, 17-14 upset.

Washington upends Dallas, 24-17, 1995

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington and Dallas games have given us many memories. In their second meeting in 1995, Washington was 3-9 and a 17.5-point underdog at Texas Stadium. Terry Allen rushed for 98 yards and a pair of scores as Washington posted a stunning victory over the 10-2 Cowboys.

Bills blitz Vikings, 27-6, 2018

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

Buffalo was 0-2 and had been walloped to the tune of 78-23 in its first two games. The Bills went into Minnesota in Week 3 as 16.5 point underdogs. All they did was score the first 27 points in the first 30 minutes. Rookie QB Josh Allen had a pair of TD runs in the 27-6 victory.

Raiders jolt Steelers, 27-24, 2009

The Raiders have not had many grand moments in the past decade. The Silver and Black went into Pittsburgh with a 3-8 record and was tabbed a 15-point underdog. Bruce Gradkowski threw for 308 yards and 3 TDs, including 2 to Louis Murphy, as Oakland exited with a 27-24 victory.

Browns 16, Steelers 15, 1999

Craig Jones/Getty Images

The Steelers pummeled the Browns, 43-0, in the season opener. Cleveland came into a Nov. 14, 1999 game with an 1-8 record against 5-3 Pittsburgh. The Browns were 14.5-point underdogs but were far from a pushover. Phil Dawson kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired to give Cleveland a shocking, 16-15, victory.

Dolphins 20, Falcons 17, 2017

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

The Dolphins and Falcons came into the Week 6 game each with 2-2 records. Somehow, Vegas found Miami to be 14-point underdogs. Probably a look into Miami 2019. Talk about a memory someone wants to keep. Cody Parkey hit a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter and the Dolphins had a surprising, 20-17 victory.

Bucs 20, Saints 17, 2009

New Orleans came into Week 16 with a 13-1 mark. The Bucs entered with the opposite record, 1-13. And for 3 quarters everything was right in the NFL and gambling world as the Saints led 17-0 … until Connor Barth hit a field goal to close the third 15 minutes. In the fourth quarter, Tampa Bay got a TD run from Cadillac Williams and a punt return to force OT. Barth kicked a field goal in the extra session and the upset was sealed.
