11 more patients die in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus

Eleven more people have died in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 174 deaths were reported by NHS England on Tuesday afternoon, taking the total number of Covid-19-related fatalities in England hospitals to 24,913.

Of these, 29 occurred on May 18, 67 were confirmed on May 17 and 33 were reported on May 16.

The figures also show 43 of the new deaths took place between May 6 and May 15 while the remaining two deaths occurred in April, with the earliest on April 1.

In the North East, Northumbria reported the most with four while three deaths were recorded at South Tyneside and Sunderland.

But according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there are at least 9,000 more coronavirus deaths in the UK than previously estimated.

This would mean that the death toll would have passed 44,000.
