11 more coronavirus deaths in Liverpool after city still mourns its deadliest day

A further 31 people who tested positive for coronavirus on Merseyside have died.

Sunday's update from the NHS revealed 11 new fatalities in Liverpool, taking the total of those who have died in the city's hospitals to 165.

The vast majority of those who died were patients at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Royal Liverpool, Aintree and Broadgreen hospitals.

The total across that trust now stands at 158, up from 148 from Saturday.

A further one person has died at specialist neurological hospital the Walton Centre, taking the total number of deaths there to four, while Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital remains at a total of three having recorded no new deaths today.

The number of deaths recorded at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Arrowe Park Hospital, has risen by eight to a total of 72.

Southport and Ormskirk Trust recorded a further three deaths, bringing its total to 44.

And there were nine new deaths at the trust covering St Helens and Whiston Hospitals, making a total of 55 overall.

In Cheshire, Warrington and Halton Hospital Trust recorded two new deaths, meaning 33 people have now died there after testing positive for Covid-19.

These figures refer only to the people who have died in hospitals after being tested for coronavirus, and do not include deaths in the community in settings such as care homes.

The numbers in the NHS's daily updates do not necessarily mean the patients have died that particular day, rather that the deaths have newly been recorded as related to coronavirus.

The numbers come amid reports the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has been discharged from hospital following his battle with the condition.

Nationally, a further 657 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 9,594.
