PHITSANULOK: An 11-month-old boy drowned on Sunday afternoon after falling from a raft into a reservoir during a family outing, police said.
The accident happened at Huay Sam Ru in Nakhon Thai district after the raft carrying the boy's family and friends had been pulled to the middle of the reservoir.
The boy was on a duck-shaped float while others swam in the water. He slipped off the float and into the water. Raft guards dived into the water but could not grab him.
The boy's mother collapsed in anguish and was rushed to hospital. The child's body was recovered a few hours later.
Amnat Kulthong, the village head and operator of the rafts, said there were strong winds and currents at the time and the guards on the raft could not get hold of the boy.
The water in the reservoir is about 20 metres deep and the rafts are popular with visitors, who are required to wear life vests, according to Mr Amnat.
