11 Merseyside areas where Covid rates are half the national average

There are 11 areas of Merseyside which have coronavirus case rates of less than half of England's average, as levels continue to fall.

Our region's infection rate as a whole continue to be higher than the England average, which was calculated at 116 cases per 100,000 people in the week up to February 19.

Many areas of our region continue to have coronavirus levels much higher than that, including areas of Liverpool, Huyton, Kirkby and St Helens.

However, NHS England's data, which also breaks down rates on a much more localised level, identifies a number of areas of Merseyside where infections are significantly lower than the national average.

They include four areas where the virus is currently "suppressed", meaning there have been less than three cases in the seven days up to February 19.

Three of those areas are in Sefton, with one in Wirral.

The other seven areas, in Earlestown, Seaforth and various parts of Liverpool and Wirral, all have rates at or below 58 cases per 100,000 people.

People across our region are being urged to continue to follow lockdown restrictions closely to ensure rates are as low as possible before schools return to in person learning on March 8.

That date is the first in a series of planned lockdown easing dates laid out by the government, though it has been made clear that if certain criteria are not met, the plan will be delayed.

Here are the nine areas where infection levels are less than half England's average (by case rate per 100,000 people)

West Kirby - Virus supressed (fewer than three cases in the seven days to February 19)

Formby Central & Freshfield South - Virus supressed (fewer than three cases in the seven days to February 19)
