11 cars damaged after 'mindless idiots' go on vandalism spree in Heaton

Vandals went on a wrecking spree in a residential area and damaged 11 cars in one night.

Three teenagers were seen damaging vehicles in Heaton, Newcastle, on Tuesday night, and a number of cars were later found with wing mirrors broken.

The incidents took place on Sackville Road and Debdon Gardens and were reported to the police.

Now officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the offence to come forward.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 9.30pm on Tuesday we received a report of three teenagers damaging vehicles on Sackville Road in Heaton.

"We attended the scene and found a total of 11 vehicles had been damaged. Enquiries to identify those responsible are ongoing and anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area, or who knows those responsible, is encouraged to contact us through our website, or by calling 101, quoting log 1078 01/12/20.”

Coun John-Paul Stephenson, who represents the Heaton ward on Newcastle City Council, has hit out at the "mindless idiots" responsible for the vandalism.

He said: "I'm devastated by the mindless vandalism in Heaton last night. Anyone with any information, or CCTV footage, please contact the police because we need to catch these thugs.

"It might be a little fun game to them, but for the victims, it means not being able to get to work, or a missed hospital appointment, not to mention a hefty bill.

"It's just not fair. Heaton is a lovely area - it's just a few mindless idiots come here to spoil it."
