Parliament confirms it will not exempt its bars from 10pm drinking curfew

*This story has been updated since its original publication

Parliament has confirmed it will not exempt its internal bars from the 10pm curfew for hospitality venues.

It had been reported that parliamentary bars would be exempt as 'workplace canteens', making them one of the few venues in England able to serve alcohol after 10pm.

But the Speaker of the House of Commons agreed on Thursday, September 24, that this would not be the case.

A spokesman for the institution clarified that Monday, September 28, would have been the first time this was applicable, because it was the first time Parliament was due to sit since new guidance came in.

The Parliamentary spokesperson also confirmed no alcohol has been served on 'parliamentary estate' post-10pm since the new guidance came in.

Last week, the government confirmed a number of new regulations, with a series of restrictions brought in for Merseyside and West Lancashire from Midnight on Tuesday before the Prime Minister then extended more measures for the whole country to try and bring down the number of coronavirus cases.

Boris Johnson confirmed all pubs, bars, restaurants and other hospitality venues in England would be required to fully close by 10pm from September 24 and must operate a table service only, except for takeaways.

Under the new rules, "workplace canteens may remain open where there is no practical alternative for staff at that workplace to obtain food."

Venues inside the House of Commons were not subject to stricter rules regarding wearing face coverings, while customers required to check in at venues also did not apply to parliamentary bars, according to a report in The Times.

A Parliamentary spokesperson said: “Alcohol will not be sold after 10pm anywhere on the parliamentary estate.”

A range of new coronavirus restrictions came into force today following the Prime Minister's announcement last week.
