10pm bar and restaurant curfew starts tonight - here are the new rules for going out in Glasgow

A curfew on Scotland's pubs and restaurants will begin tonight as new coronavirus lockdown restrictions are introduced.

From tonight, venues will need to close by 10pm, resulting in major changes to Glasgow's social scene. The same rules have been applied in England.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has stated it is necessary in order to stop the rising coronavirus figures in the country.

Speaking at the Scottish Parliament earlier this week, Ms Sturgeon said: "We will introduce a strict nationwide curfew for pubs, bars and restaurants. From Friday, pubs, bars and restaurants will be required to close at 10pm."

The new restriction was announced alongside a number of other significant new rules, including a nationwide ban on visiting other households, which had previously only applied to certain areas in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and a ban on car-sharing with people from outside your household.

The new rules are even stricter for student, with the First Minister instructing them to avoid going to pubs or restaurants at all this weekend.

Police Scotland have been given powers to enforce the new rules, including taking home or arresting those who do not follow their instructions or where they deem it necessary.

The new rules have been implented as Scotland saw its biggest daily rise in coronavirus cases, with 558 new positive cases and 255 in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.
