In March, Francesco Rizzo, the pilot, who is a flight instructor from Rome, Italy, tried to make the 8kg drop to a contact in Sardinia.
According to the Daily Mail, Rizzo flew his Cessna propeller plane at a low enough altitude as he dropped the canvas bag near Baratici San Pietro, a small village.
However, the plan didn’t go smoothly.
Instead of the drugs getting to the traffickers, it fell through the roof of a neighbor who had no clue what was going on.
On hearing the loud bang, the homeowners immediately called the police, confused about how the drugs even ended up being their home.
The police said that the street value for the cocaine was around £6.8million ($9.5m).
In further investigation, investigators discovered that the plane had departed from Roma Urbe airport Before making a pit stop at Monti della Tolfa airfield before heading to Sardinia.
Photographed by CCTV, the GPS, which investigators analyzed showed that the plane had flown over villages in Oristano.
For three months, the police were trying to track down the pilot who also works for a Hungarian company flying VIPs and private planes.
On Tuesday, Rizzo was arrested when making a stop at Cagliari-Elmas airport on Sardinia on a flight from Germany.
Investigators are still trying to look for other people involved in the drug trafficking scheme.
This was the first time the police have ever heard of anyone attempting to do a drug exchange in this manner.
