108-year-old woman's key to long life is champagne

SWNS

An 108-year-old woman credits drinking champagne to her long life, according to her care worker.

Dorothy Flowers, who lives at Southlands Care Home in Harrogate, celebrated her milestone birthday with a glass of her favourite alcoholic beverage, which resident manager Helene Ballinger said is “her real secret to longevity”.

“It’s the only thing we ever see her finish a glass of,” Ballinger added.

“Needless to say, we’ve been toasting her birthday.”

Flowers received more than 650 cards on her birthday, the care home reports.

The messages came from all over the world, with greetings from Bangkok, Las Vegas, New York and Australia.

Flowers’ partner Leonard passed away in 1981 and the two never had children, though she remains close with her niece, Judith.

“We never dreamt that my aunt would receive so many cards,” Judith said before explaining how sociable Flowers is, adding that “she’s always been happiest when surrounded by others”.

Judith continued: “While she’s not able to speak any more, the smile on her face said it all.

“It was a wonderful surprise and has helped make her day so special.”
