108 migrants 'seize control of tanker off coast of Libya in attempt to reach Malta'

A group of 108 migrants are reported to have hijacked a merchant ship off the coast of Libya in an attempt to reach Europe.

The El Hiblu 1 tanker was taken over by the large number of migrants six miles off the Libyan coast, according to the Times of Malta.

The ship is charting a course towards either Malta or Lampedusa.

A military spokeswoman said the ship was due to reach Maltese waters by around 6.45pm.

The ship is being monitored by two Libyan Coast Guard vessels.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said it was being dealt with as an "act of piracy."
